About mARTilda

My dear companion! I am excited you want to learn more about mARTilda.

My name is Kristina Wittig - the artist behind mARTilda.

Growing up in East Germany in the early 80s, I learned young to use available materials and turn them into something beautiful and fun. That's the magic of not having a lot.

During my time in the corporate world, my mind sought diversion and relaxation. Art gave me the freedom to express myself in a way that the 9-to-5 job couldn't. I went outside and did urban sketching, which made me see and observe my environment differently. I kept my eyes open and used watercolor as the core painting medium. Watercolor taught me to let go and just let the pigmented water flow.

In 2020, when the pandemic hit the globe, we all were challenged by the circumstances. The art community adapted rapidly, and life drawing classes operated online. Henceforth I got the opportunity to draw all these astonishing and expressive models worldwide.

The pandemic gave me something valuable - time. Spending more time indoors, I started using oil paint, a medium that always seemed intimidating to me. I enjoy the slowness, the deeply saturated colors, and the layering immensely. I finally found the painting medium that allows me to express myself and my emotions and experiment.

Since sharing is caring, I'm now ready to distribute my paintings and give back to the art community who inspired and soothed me at all times.

By the way, did you know that mARTilda means "mighty in the battle?"
