website: SKTCHY

SKTCHY provides 30 inspiring reference photos and 30 video drawing lessons (about 60 minutes each). The challenge is suitable for artists of all skill levels, from beginners to masters.

The ten teachers, or should I say the "extraordinary pen and pencil artists from around the world" are:

  • Alvin Chong

  • David Tenorio

  • Joan Martin

  • Juan Perednik

  • Justin Maas

  • Kirsten Britt

  • Kyle Legaspi

  • Tiffany S. DaVanzo

  • Shanay Scarlet Manitzky

  • Zac Rybacki

drawing skills to focus on:

  • Capturing likeness through accurate proportions, value building, edge control, etc.

  • Hatching (cross and contour) and blending

  • Establishing focal points

  • Controlling ink flow

  • Hand-eye coordination

  • Observation skills

  • Drawing more accurate eyes through simplification

  • Gesture drawing

  • Composition

  • Drawing by erasing

  • Facial anatomy, especially in older faces

art supply list:

  • Pens: ballpoints (black, blue, and various bright colors); water-soluble (e.g., Pilot G2); gel (white); fineliner

  • Pencil: lead (2B-8B, 2H, HB); mechanical (2B, 4B, HB); colored (black, red, white)

  • Paper: white/light and, optionally, toned gray and blue

  • Eraser

  • Optional: white acrylic paint for highlighting; white charcoal; ink (pink, sepia, grey); brush; shading stick; sandpaper

materials: keep it simple, but impactful

The recommended art supplies are pens and pencils. Simple, but impactful. If you manage to draw an accurate image of a face, you can capture anything on paper. On top, these materials are cheap. We always have them around or with us. The easy access to art supplies eliminates the excuses, and stick with the drawing or even make it a daily routine.
